Gran Turismo trailer shows us that video game movies are here to stay

Well, gentlemen, it looks like video game movies are back on the menu. With the blazing success of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros movie, having crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office, it is clear that there is a market for video game adaptations if done right. Fans have been starved of good video game adaptations for decades now and it's only now that we have films that gamers actually want to see. And unlike the droll and tedious Last of Us Tv show, Super Mario Bros was a celebration of everything Mario and it worked. Nintendo didn’t need to shove in ideological messaging for its film to be successful, unlike The Last of Us which literally jammed all its ‘progressive’ ideas down our throats and still failed as a basic TV show. On the other hand, we have Neil Blomkamp’s Gran Turismo which actually looks like fun.

Gran Turismo set to release in August

One would think the film would be about some kind of race but surprisingly, it actually focuses on the game itself. It turns the game into a tournament where driving sim fans can enter and win. If anything this film plays like fan-favourite The Wizard and forges a new story for anyone looking to get into driving sims. It’s a novel idea that could work and judging by the fan reaction to the trailer, it looks to be all positive. The film is also based on a true story. It adapts the story of Jann Mardenborough, who is a superfan of Gran Turismo and charts his journey from winning local competitions to actually turning it into a full-fledged racing career.

Directed by visionary Neil Blomkamp, we can expect a ton of cool effects and exciting car chases. The film stars Archie Madekwe, David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Djimon Hounsou and Geri Halliwell and could well be the second video game adaptation this year to appeal to actual gamers and normies alike. The film is set to release sometime in August this year.
