Facebook tool to let users transfer their pictures to Google Photos

Facebook is releasing a new tool today that will let users transfer their photos from Facebook to Google Photos. The tool is only available in Ireland as of now, and will roll out to the rest of the world in 2020. This tool is a part of Facebook’s Data Transfer Project. The Data Transfer Project is a collaborative effort with Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter to build a common way for people to transfer their data between online services. According to Facebook, “The goal of this project has been to make it easier for services of any size to securely make direct transfers for data portability from one service to another and to make the process simpler for the people who use these services.”

The tool is a nice way for people to backup their Facebook photos as a part of the Google Photos Library. If you have photos on Facebook that aren’t a part of your Google Photos Library, the process of adding them to your collection will become easier. As mentioned above, the service is currently available in Ireland only and maybe once the kinks have been ironed out, the tool will be rolled out to other markets.

With companies like Apple, Microsoft and Twitter also involved in the project, it looks like in the future one will be able to transfer their iPhone photo library to Google and vice versa. If you are interested in understanding the tool in detail, you can do so here.
