LG will sell rollable TVs in 2019: Report

If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then LG plans on selling TVs that can roll up like a projector screen in 2019. The concept is nothing new as LG did showcase the rollable TV at CES 2018. The TV retracts and rolls up similar to a poster or a mechanized projector screen. The TV showcased at CES was 65-inches in size and was an OLED TV. According to Bloomberg, “LG is counting on so-called “rollable” and OLED televisions to revive a consumer electronics business that’s grappling with price declines and stiffening Chinese competition.” LG has pioneered the OLED TV line-up and in 2018 launched a line-up of OLED TVs that were fantastic performers. We reviewed the LG C8 OLED TV and you can check out our detailed review of the TV here. It is possible that LG could showcase a consumer version of the rollable OLED TV at CES 2019. According to Bloomberg, “OLED TVs are estimated to account for just 1.1 percent of the market this year, while LCDs claim almost 98 percent, according to data tracker Statista. But unit shipments of OLED TVs are projected to grow 70 percent next year to 4 million from an estimated 2.35 million this year.” The growth of OLED TVs in the coming years is inevitable as the technology becomes older and manufacturers find cheaper alternative and reduce cost of production which helps reduce the overall final price for the consumer. We expect to see more OLED TVs hitting the market in 2019. Having said that we have seen the launch of a number of LED backlit LCD TVs in India in 2018. Xiaomi launched its portfolio of TVs ranging from HD ready to 4K HDR. Thomson, Kodak and others also launched their offerings in the country. Blaupunkt, a company known for its audio products also entered the TV market in India. Another new and upcoming technology that manufacturers like LG want to cash in on is 5G. 5G is expected to hit the streets by 2019 and Samsung, OnePlus, LG and more are working towards launching 5G capable devices. Apple on the other hand isn’t expected to launch a 5G iPhone till 2019, if information on the internet is to be believed. Foldable screen is another area where companies are vying to be the first to launch a device. From Samsung to LG and even some Chinese manufacturers like Huawei, all are looking to bring foldable smartphones to consumers hands in 2019. 2018 was a good year for consumer technology innovations but it looks like 2019 will be the year when we see the birth of a few new product categories.
