Future iPhones could have a display hole for selfie camera, Apple patent reveals

The company that invented the display notch is now working to remove it altogether. The Apple iPhone X introduced the notch on top of the display (which has now been copied across by almost every other smartphone maker), and now, the company may have found a workaround. The notch was introduced primarily to increase the screen real-estate without increasing the footprint of the device. It was a way to keep all the sensors in their place and still stretch the display all the way to the edges. A new patent filed by Apple indicates future iPhones may work around the notch by using nothing but holes in the display for the front camera.    The camera hole is located in the top right corner of the phone, in the patent diagram filed by Apple. It’s called “Integrated Camera Window”. The patent was filed at the United States Patent and Trademark Office back in June this year, and was only approved by the regulatory body on November 8.    In the patent are a series of diagrams that indicate the front camera on the iPhone will located on the top right corner to the display. It will be covered with a glass that’s chemically molded and strengthened. The glass cover might withstand a lot of stress, according to the patent. It also suggests the display may or may not have a hole.    Front camera integrated in the display is not new for the smartphone industry though. The feature will be present in future smartphones by Samsung, Huawei, Asus and LG — All of them have filed individual patents for the technology with minimal differentiation. Knowing Apple, it will only make the feature mainstream if it works flawlessly.    It’s being rumoured right now that the 2019 iPhones could come with the newly-patented feature.
